Description
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day gives communities across the country time to not only celebrate his life but also reflect on Dr. King's legacy.
Tampa’s MLK Parade was filled with people from all different walks of life. Dr. King spent his life being a public servant spreading a message of love and hope.
Members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, like Torrez Grace said they're proud to call him their brother.
“It's super emotional. Pride comes to mind immediately, but then courage to be able to do what Dr. King did to lead a movement, to change a nation, to change a people, to uplift our community,” Grace said.
In Tampa, several groups are working to continue his dream of breaking barriers.
“Our program fills a void. It's that every day we have more and more young people that are aging out of our school system that needs life skills and job skills,” Erika Perez with Miracles in Motion said.
Something they said anyone can relate to.
“We want every child to know that 'I am power.' We want to empower them to do the great things inside of them that they want to be,” Robert Strickland with Impowered Minds said.
People lining the streets said this family affair is bigger than catching beads and candy. It’s a teaching moment for younger generations.
Many said more change is needed, as President Donald Trump's inauguration shared the day with King. He pledged to make King’s dream a reality.
“Brother King would be imploring our leaders of this country to do what we've all been promised they should do as leaders and to take up the mantle of leadership to serve and protect everyone not just a certain class of people,” Grace said.
