Description
Strong winds and heavy thunderstorms may have canceled the annual Tampa Bay Frogman Swim, but they couldn't dampen the spirit of remembrance that brought dozens of Gold Star families together at Gandy Beach Sunday morning.
The event, which typically features hundreds of swimmers braving the waters of Tampa Bay to raise money for the Navy SEAL Foundation, took on a different form as dangerous conditions forced organizers to prioritize safety. Even the Coast Guard was unable to navigate the treacherous weather.
"Just the fact that we get to suffer a little bit and remember the sacrifices that they gave is just a little contribution to that pain and the memories," event organizer Brian Velenza said.
As waves crashed against the shore and flags whipped in the wind, Gold Star families gathered to honor their fallen heroes. The ceremony included the solemn reading of names, each one accompanied by the toll of a bell echoing across the beach.
