Description
Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed the person set to replace Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate — Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody.
Moody has a clear mission for her time in the Senate. "America first. Get it done," she said Thursday morning.
Rubio is undergoing his confirmation hearing for secretary of state this week in Washington and if confirmed, his seat becomes vacant.
The Florida governor has the authority to appoint someone to fill the vacancy and that person will represent the Sunshine State until the seat is up for election in 2026.
“We have to deliver on the mandate that the voters gave President Donald Trump," DeSantis said earlier this week about what he was looking for. "We have got to have somebody that's going to be strong on immigration. Our voters want to see that, and not just illegal immigration by the way, making sure that these visa programs aren't being used to undermine American workers."
Who is Ashley Moody?
Ashely Moody assumed office on Jan. 8, 2019, as the 38th attorney general for Florida. She followed former attorney general Pam Bondi, another Tampa Bay area native who is currently testifying before the Senate for her own confirmation as the nation’s attorney general.
Moody, born and raised in Plant City, began her legal career with the law firm of Holland & Knight where she practiced commercial litigation, according to the attorney general's website. She then went on to join the U.S. Attorney's Office prosecuting drug, firearm and fraud offenses.
She also became the youngest judge in the state in 2006 at the age of 31.
