Description
A Florida jury has found Tracey Nix, a 67-year-old grandmother from Hardee County, not guilty of aggravated manslaughter in the death of her 7-month-old granddaughter, Uriel Schock, who died after being left in a hot car in November 2022.
However, Nix was convicted of the lesser charge of leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.
The tragedy occurred when Nix forgot Uriel in her car after returning from lunch with friends.
Temperatures reached 90°F that day, and the infant succumbed to hyperthermia.
This incident marked the second grandchild to die under Nix’s care; her grandson Ezra drowned in 2021, though no charges were filed in that case.
Prosecutors argued that Nix’s actions amounted to criminal negligence.
Defense attorney Bill Fletcher countered that the incident was a terrible accident, stating, “The jury made an appropriate decision in this case. We certainly intend to appeal.”
Uriel’s parents expressed mixed emotions about the verdict.
“I was relieved to hear that there was going to be accountability and ownership and a conclusion to this part of the story," her mother, Kaila Nix, said. "One of the things that we struggled with through this whole case has been the exclusion of my other story, which is my son who drowned in her care. And so, for us, this is a win for Uri, but I have a son named Ezra, and he has not been spoken of enough. And he died in her care.”
