Description
Since back-to-back hurricanes in our area, we've covered permit issues, regulations forcing people to move or lift up homes, and recently, FEMA housing vouchers running out while people still can't return home.
All of those problems arrive after insurance and FEMA inspectors show up. But, we found many are still waiting for FEMA to make their first visit.
Catherine Boykin and Eric Desonie live on the same street in St. Petersburg, but ever since Hurricane Helene, they've each been hundreds of miles away.
“During Hurricane Helene, I had two feet of water in the house,” Boykin said. “I’m in north Alabama. I had to leave the area because I didn't have a place to stay."
“Four feet; it was up to my waist,” Desonie said. “I went to Colorado to find a place to temporary live, which I did in Colorado Springs.”
