Description
Harkening back to the time of the famous New York Yankees lineup, Gov. Ron DeSantis dubbed the trio of U.S. Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez as the “murderers’ row” of prosecutors — all women who hail from the greater-Tampa area.
They were all in Tampa on Tuesday as part of a large audience of notables on hand for Lopez’s swearing-in ceremony. Originally picked by DeSantis after he suspended her predecessor, Lopez was the first woman elected as Hillsborough State Attorney in November.
While Bondi is heading back to D.C. for Senate confirmation hearings, DeSantis is set to fill a Senate seat left open by another President-elect Donald Trump cabinet pick.
With Marco Rubio nominated for Secretary of State, DeSantis says he hasn’t decided on his replacement yet, but one is coming soon.
“We have to deliver on the mandate that the voters gave President Donald Trump. We have got to have somebody that's going to be strong on immigration. Our voters want to see that, and not just illegal immigration by the way making sure that these visa programs aren't being used to undermine American workers,” DeSantis said on what he’s looking for.
“I want somebody who's going to go in there and be willing to reduce [bureaucracy] down to size and to hold the wayward bureaucrats accountable," he continued.
Reportedly on the shortlist of potential picks is Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, who was also in attendance Tuesday.
Asked if his selection was in the room with us, DeSantis laughed saying, “I'm not going to be refereeing any who's in, who's out, but I will say we've, we've done a lot of research on candidates. I think that we've got a lot of great people in Florida who have made a big difference.”
