New court documents have revealed that the off-duty ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) agent who was shot by a teen at a Riverview bowling alley last Friday is paralyzed. The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Friday at The Alley at Southshore at 10221 Big Bend Road. The agent, whose identity has remained confidential, was with his wife and children at the bowling alley. As they were leaving, he saw a fight involving three people in the parking lot and decided to intervene, according to Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer. "Even when we are not wearing our uniform we have a duty to act," Maurer said at a news conference. "He saw danger and tried to quell that danger." A motion for pretrial detention from the Hillsborough County Court said 18-year-old Christopher Smith shot the agent in the neck. The agent was reportedly taken to Tampa General Hospital for emergency surgery. Though he survived the operation, documents revealed he is "suffering from paralysis of all four extremities." "His preliminary prognosis includes at least some irreversible paralysis due to the injuries sustained from the gunshot wound," the document stated.
