Description
An investigation is underway following a shooting involving an officer in downtown Tampa.
It happened on Channelside Drive near Sparkman Wharf Saturday night, according to the Tampa Police Department. In a press conference, Chief Deputy Brett Owen said two reserve officers were working an intersection in the area just before 7 p.m. as part of the Lightning game.
Reserve officers are volunteer employees trained to provide additional personnel for emergencies or special events, officials said. These officers do not have body-worn cameras.
Owen said the two officers had an "interaction" with a 38-year-old man, which led to one of the officers firing her weapon. The man was reportedly hit three times. The second officer did not fire any weapon.
During an early investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) said the man threatened to shoot "another officer" and reached for his pocket before getting shot.
The man was taken to the hospital where officials say he is in critical condition but stable Sunday. No officers were reported to be injured in the incident.
While Tampa police have not released her name, they said the officer who fired her weapon has had more than a decade of law enforcement experience.
