Another Florida representative has left the Democratic party to join Republicans ahead of the 2025 legislative session. On Friday, Rep. Hillary Cassel became the second House Democrat to switch parties this month, following Rep. Susan Valdés' jump on Dec. 9. Cassel announced the news in a statement on X, explaining that she believes in the House Republicans' "vision for a better, more prosperous Florida." "Today, I am announcing my decision to change my party affiliation from Democrat to Republican," Cassel wrote, in part. "I can no longer remain in a party that doesn't represent my values." She cited the Democratic party's "failure to unequivocally support Israel" and "willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism" as reasons behind her decision. Cassel also expressed concern about what she called the Democrats' inability "to relate to everyday Floridians." "I know I won't always agree on every detail with every Republican, but I do know that I will always have input, collaboration, and respect," Cassel continued. The statement echoes that of her fellow House Democrat-turned-Republican Rep. Susan Valdés. "I know that I won't agree with my fellow Republican House members on every issue, but I know that in their caucus, I will be welcomed and treated with respect," Valdés' statement read, in part.
