Description
An elderly man in Largo is charged with attempted murder after he tried to kill his wife and then himself on Christmas Day, police said.
It happened just before 8 a.m. on Christmas at a home on Pine Cone Way near Whispering Drive. Police said 78-year-old Jonathan McPhee called 911 saying he had killed his wife and was going to kill himself. According to the arrest affidavit, McPhee told 911 operators that he did this because of financial issues.
"I clubbed her and I'm going to try to stab myself in the heart," he reportedly said during the call.
Friends and family identified the wife as Lainey McPhee.
Officers went to the home where they found Jonathan McPhee with a self-inflicted stab wound and Lainey McPhee suffering from blunt-force trauma.
The affidavit said Jonathan McPhee bludgeoned his wife on the side of her head with a small sledgehammer while she was lying in bed.
