Description
A little girl from Polk County is spending Christmas in the pediatric burn unit at Tampa General Hospital after a bonfire ignited her clothes.
She has a long recovery ahead, and her mother is helping keep her spirits high. Addie Powell would much prefer to show the pictures and videos of her daughter dancing, swimming and jumping on a trampoline. But it’ll be weeks before Mylia Young will be able to do those things again.
“Mylia is literally my world,” Powell says. “She was at a bonfire with family and friends on Saturday night, just celebrating Christmas.”
Powell hadn't arrived yet and got a call that Mylia got too close to the flames and her shoes and pants caught on fire.
“Once I got to Tampa General [Hospital] and they undid…the dressings and I saw the extent of the burns,” she adds. “It was very heartbreaking to see your daughter have to endure that kind of pain.”
Mylia got second and third-degree burns over much of her shins, ankles and feet. Monday was her first surgery. Thursday is her next one to graft new skin onto hers.
“She's been good after surgery,” she says about Mylia’s spirits. “She was in a good amount of pain but you know that kind of subsided after a couple hours now she's back to her very rambunctious self,” adding she sometimes tries to walk even though she can’t stand up on her own.
