For the students at Foster Elementary, Christmas came early this year. On Thursday, Santa Claus and his team of elves delivered gifts to every single classroom, bringing smiles and joy to 450 children who may not have had much of a holiday otherwise. The event was organized by Christmas with Class, a non-profit founded by Blaine and Stephanie Patterson. What began as a simple holiday tradition seven years ago—adopting a single classroom—has grown into an effort to sponsor entire schools. “I hate getting gifts, but love giving them,” said Blaine Patterson. “Her present to me one year was to adopt a class, and that’s how it all started.” This year, Christmas with Class sponsored all 26 classrooms at Foster Elementary, with each classroom backed by local community members who donated gifts. For the Pattersons, this year held particular significance. “With all the things that have gone on—the hurricanes and hardships—we just knew it would be tougher for so many families this year,” said Blaine. “We wanted to make sure it was just as special as any other year.” Santa’s arrival was met with cheers, giggles, and wide-eyed wonder from the students as they unwrapped their gifts. “It’s just a great feeling seeing the smiles on the students’ faces,” said Micahlee Williams, a second-grade teacher at Foster Elementary. “They didn’t expect this, so it was such a great surprise for them. Their families will definitely appreciate it.” Williams added that the children had faced significant challenges this year, including the aftermath of the hurricane season. “Trust me, they’ve been through so much. This brings them so much joy, and I’m sure they’ll have a very merry Christmas.” The event also made a lasting impression on the community members who sponsored classrooms, many of whom participated for the first time. “Not gonna lie, there were tears in my eyes,” said Alex Menko, one of the sponsors. “It’s a great organization and definitely something I would do again.” Another sponsor, Joel Rush, said, “To kick off the day and have the kids believe in Santa and what the whole season is about—it’s just awesome to be part of.” Evan Conley, who also joined in as a sponsor, added, “It just makes you feel so good to see their faces light up.” As wrapping paper filled the classrooms and children squealed with excitement, the holiday spirit was palpable. For the Pattersons, the mission of Christmas with Class is simple: to spread joy and give back to the community. “We’re just so happy to be able to provide Christmas to these children—kids who might not otherwise have a Christmas,” said Stephanie Patterson. With the success of this year’s event, the Pattersons hope to expand their efforts to include even more schools in the future.
