A pair of porch pirates were caught after they reportedly stole packages from the doorsteps of multiple homes in Manatee County, according to sheriff's deputies. Joseph Burden, 41, and 42-year-old Jessica McNew were arrested Tuesday after detectives were able to track them to a home in Bradenton and find evidence that linked both to multiple thefts around Manatee County, mainly in Lakewood Ranch. Doorbell cameras captured the two at various homes they stole from, allowing detectives to gather enough identifiable information to find them later that day as they were wearing the same clothes as seen on video. Detectives said during one of the thefts, Burden and McNew were caught on camera backing a white Toyota Solara into the driveway of a home before walking to the front door, each grabbing a package and returning to the car and driving away. The car's license plate was also caught on camera, and detectives said they were able to confirm the same car was seen at several other porch pirate crime scenes. Detectives got a search warrant for a home and detached shed located on 51st Avenue E in Bradenton. During their search, detectives said they found packages and "various personal property" inside. Additionally, investigators found a "large assortment" of Christmas cards and other mail believed to have been taken from mailboxes inside the trunk of the accused porch pirates' car. Burden and McNew were both charged with multiple counts of grand theft from a residence. Detectives say more charges are expected as they continue investigating.
