Description
The 10 Tampa Bay sports team goes one-on-one with a Buccaneers player every week. In this week's edition of "The One Buc," sports reporter David Schiele speaks with tight end Payne Durham.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Suwanee, Georgia native always had the size to play football. He played the sport in middle school but opted to focus on lacrosse when he started attending Peachtree Ridge High School. It took a lost bet to the school's football coach, Reggie Stancil, for Durham to return to the gridiron.
"[Stancil] made me a bet on a basketball court that if he made a shot, I'd go out and play [football]," he said. "He made it, so here I am."
Durham recorded 22 receptions for 330 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. His lone high school season was enough to earn a football scholarship to Purdue.
As a Boilermaker, he played in 45 games, scoring 21 touchdowns and recording the sixth-most receiving yards by a tight end in program history.
Now in his second year with Tampa Bay, Durham continues to learn about football and how to be a pro.
"I've just learned to really love the game in a different way [and] on the business side of things. [I've] been enjoying it. It's been a heck of a ride," he said.
Durham does not catch the football as much as he used to. He only has seven catches for 92 yards in almost two full seasons. He mostly blocks when on the field. However, he appreciates the Buccaneers for giving him a chance to play professionally and plans to repay them with his loyalty.
"I love Tampa. I love playing here. I love, from top-to-bottom, the front office, the coaches, the guys. My personal goal is to be a Buccaneer forever," he said.
Durham and the Buccaneers play their final road game of the regular season this Sunday night against the Cowboys.
