After months of going without a restaurant at Lakeland Linder Airport, the city has announced it's finally landed a new food vendor.
Waco Kitchen’s sudden departure was particularly tough timing for the airport.
The terminal was about to open its doors to commercial airline Avelo, and that left passengers with few if any dining options.
Larry and Donna Lambert have flown on Avelo before. They say they love the price and convenience, but not the lack of restaurant options at Lakeland Linder.
“We went 13 miles out of our way to eat lunch before we got here. Knowing that they didn’t have a restaurant,” said Larry Lambert.
Like most passengers, the Lamberts expect to be able to grab food while waiting for their flight, but during the first few months of Avelo's presence at Lakeland Linder airport there's been no restaurant.
“Yeah, depending on how many legs in your trip and stuff, you definitely need that option,” said passenger Pat Fett.
Passenger Danny Sein agreed. “Absolutely, they should. Definitely. When the people come from outside, they expect food or a drink or something to eat,” said Sein.
Now, the terminal is about to get a new restaurant tenant called Sora – which means “sky” in Japanese.
It's a five-year lease to open an Asian fusion food hall concept which will also be serving American standby favorites like breakfast and burgers as well.
“We've had some difficulty filling this spot at the airport,” city council member Stephanie Madden acknowledged. “And we know how critically important this is.”
