Description
A man is in surgery after deputies say he tried to break into a gun store, charged at responding deputies with a knife, and then said "thank you" after he was shot by law enforcement.
It all started around 8:15 a.m. Friday on Little Road in New Port Richey, according to Sheriff Chris Nocco. The man, identified as Scott Yeomans, tried to break into a gun store using a large road work sign. Surveillance video shows him using the sign to try to break the glass of the store.
A worker at a gas station next to the gun store reportedly asked him what he was doing, to which he replied he was trying to break into the store.
After more failed attempts at getting into the store, Yeomans started walking away. The gas station worker reported what was going on to law enforcement and deputies responded to the area.
Deputies began searching for Yeomans and located him not far away on Little Road. Nocco said a detective was first to spot him and went to approach him. As he did, Yeomans reportedly pulled out a knife.
The detective called for backup and more deputies arrived to assist. Nocco said deputies worked to de-escalate the situation and were working on using "non-lethal weapons" to try to subdue him.
Nocco said that Yeomans refused to drop the knife and didn't listen to the deputies asking him to let them help him, saying they "wouldn't understand." As deputies were working on non-lethal ways of ending this "peacefully," the sheriff said Yeomans started charging at deputies while still armed with the knife.
Nocco added Yeomans got really close to deputies as they opened fire, using both their guns and tasers. Yeomans fell to the ground and hit his head.
