Description
Two firefighters were hit "without warning" by a driver Friday morning outside their fire station in Safety Harbor. One had to be airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.
The crash happened around 9 a.m. Friday at Safety Harbor Fire Station 53 on McMullen Booth Road, Palm Harbor Fire Rescue said in a release.
The driver of a red SUV appears to have hit the two firefighters while they were "performing their daily duties" on the front driveway of the fire station.
The two firefighters that were hit were identified as 50-year-old Captain Joseph Hans and 36-year-old firefighter & paramedic Ryan Craig. Hans has been with the fire department since March 2002 and Craig since November 2018.
Fire officials said that Hans needed to be airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. According to a GoFundMe, "Captain Hans was thrown a significant distance."
Craig was treated at the scene.
