Tropical Storm Debby's rainfall is causing several streets to flood in St. Petersburg and Tampa, even prompting a flash flood warning for parts of Manatee and Sarasota counties. Some of the stronger storms embedded in the storm's rainbands will dump a tremendous amount of rain and even cause a brief tornado spin-up or two. A tornado watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. National Hurricane Center forecasters anticipate Debby will reach Category 1 hurricane strength before making landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida late Sunday into early Monday morning. Tropical Storm Debby has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and is located about 120 miles west of Tampa. It is moving to the north at 12 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center's latest update. Areas that experience landfall will see the most significant wind impacts. Outside of those areas, tremendous rainfall is anticipated. "Debby is expected to produce rainfall totals of 6 to 12 inches, with maximum amounts of 18 inches, across portions of northern Florida and southeastern North Carolina through Friday morning," forecasters said. "This rainfall will likely result in areas of considerable flash and urban flooding, with significant river flooding expected." Florida's Big Bend and Nature Coast are within the hurricane center's cone of uncertainty, as seen below. However, impacts from a tropical storm do occur well outside the cone, and that's expected in Debby's case.
