A new program launched by the Tampa Police Department aims to reduce the number of mental health calls officers respond to and instead provide people experiencing crisis with intervention specialists. The agency has started its Crisis Intervention Dispatch Service Program to connect people who call 911 to resources relating to behavioral health crisis support. TPD explains the program will allow dispatch center staff to transfer someone experiencing a mental or behavioral health crisis to a trained intervention specialist.
