After a controversial school board shut down Just Elementary School in West Tampa last year, Hillsborough County Public Schools announced plans Thursday morning to construct a new school in its place. It will reopen alongside a newly constructed Stewart Middle School, Superintendent Van Ayres announced. Hillsborough NAACP President Yvette Lewis said she is satisfied with the decision, and was part of the conversation about building the new campus. The announcement comes as West Tampa is undergoing massive change, with hundreds of new homes being built in the area. Impact fees from the new construction will help pay for the new schools. A school board vote is still required to make the decision final.
