Description
The future of Tampa Bay's famous party spot, Beer Can Island, will be determined by someone with a lot of cash.
Pine Key, the island's actual name, was listed for sale Thursday for $14.2 million, according to a news release. The 9-acre island plus another 60 acres of submerged land surrounding it is available for purchase.
That also means Beer Can Island is closed to the public — showings are available by appointment only and "trespassing is strictly prohibited."
"This opportunity is exceedingly rare, as Pine Key is one of the only privately owned islands in Tampa Bay," said Cole Weaver, the majority owner of Pine Key in a news release. "We’re grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from the community and our members over the years, but all good things must come to an end at some point, and for us, that time is now."
Over the past many years, Beer Can Island has been a popular place for people to enjoy the water. It's been the scene for boaters, tiki boat operators and everyone else enjoying a drink on the water. It, too, drew the ire of law enforcement and government officials.
