Description
A beloved restaurant in Hernando County is working to rebuild after a fire tore through the business last weekend.
According to fire officials, around 8:40 p.m. Saturday, The Drunken Mullet in Hernando Beach experienced an electrical fire that started in a shipping container turned office space, adjacent to the building.
"It went from a fun carefree night to such an intense situation," server Shannon Gebhardt said. "It was literally fire coming out the window over here, all the way up, you could see the line of fire going all the way across the roof."
Hernando County Fire Rescue credits restaurant staff with getting everyone to safety.
"We were able to get everyone out of here and get the parking lots emptied so the fire trucks could come in here and do what they needed to do," Gebhardt added.
The business has been a staple in the Hernando Beach community since 2019, drawing regulars like Wayne Smeal and Kurt Widmur.
"This is our 'Cheers!'" Smeal said. "Everybody comes here! Maybe for a few minutes or a few hours. Some of us are here quite often."
