Description
Packing peanuts, foam coolers and foam food containers could soon be a thing of the past thanks to a new bill now in Congress.
The recently introduced "Farewell to Foam Act" would phase out plastic foam use across the country by 2026. The legislation would also ban “loose fill” such as packing peanuts, and non-medical disposable coolers – materials known to cause adverse health effects and pollute waterways.
For businesses that have done away with plastic foam, more commonly known by the brand name Styrofoam, they know it's the little changes that can have a ripple effect.
"There were all kinds of really great products that we could use for our to-go containers that would be a little less harsh on the environment," Kelly Lessem, the owner of Squeeze Juice Works said.
The downtown juice shop doesn't have any single-use plastic foam items inside, especially not any cups or to-go containers. Even the straws offered to customers are made from the pits of avocados.
"All of our bottles for our juice are biodegradable, they have an eco-clear solution in them, that helps them break down," Lessem explained.
