Description
Firefighters contained a massive blaze that gutted a large seven-story building in central Sydney on Thursday and forced emergency services to evacuate people from nearby apartment buildings.
Over 30 firetrucks and 120 firefighters fought a huge fire in an abandoned former hat factory close to Sydney's central railway station on Thursday afternoon, according to New South Wales Fire and Rescue Acting Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell. Witnesses said they heard a loud crash and the ground shook when the walls of the building collapsed.
Hundreds of people emerging from the busy station watched from safety as walls weakened by hours of fire tumbled onto streets cleared by emergency personnel.
Light rail services near the blaze were suspended until further notice, an update from New South Wales Transport said.
