Description
A large-scale fire at a recycling facility in Richmond, Indiana, sent plumes of black smoke into the sky Tuesday (4/11) afternoon. Residents within half a mile of the fire were asked to evacuate. Those downwind from the fire or with breathing problems were asked to shelter in place.
Richmond's fire chief said the blaze began in a semi-trailer containing various types of plastic. The fire then spread quickly to other nearby piles and eventually the 175,000-square-foot facility.
It sent plumes of thick black smoke into the air that could be seen more than 20 miles away. Smoke that the state fire marshal says is toxic.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the EPA are on-site monitoring conditions. Residents are urged to take precautions.
