The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning the public of the increasing threat of a possible spread of a deadly fungus. Candida auris is an emerging fungus considered an "urgent antimicrobial resistance threat" and according to the government agency, it was spreading at an alarming rate in U.S. healthcare facilities from 2020-2021. What's also concerning about the situation was a tripling of the number of cases that were resistant to antifungal medicine most recommended for treatment in 2021. Science News reports before 2020, six people were known to have echinocandin-resistant infections along with four other people having infections resistant to all three classes of drugs for antifungal.
