Description
Parents and teachers are calling on Tacoma Public Schools to make improvements to an elementary school campus in Tacoma’s South End.
Birney Elementary School got a new building built in 2020, and original plans for the campus included building the new school, demolishing the two old buildings, and creating sports fields and a playground in their place.
But five years later, the two old buildings still haven’t been demolished, and no sports fields were created. The district said they had to change plans due to construction costs being higher than planned.
“They deserve more, and so it feels like the job isn't done,” said Amber Elbon, a parent of a third grader at the school.
