Description
Images of Catholic churches in Shanghai, Beijing, and the northern Chinese city of Baoding, a day after the Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis.
"It's very sad. At yesterday's mass (held in remembrance of Pope Francis) many Catholics shed tears," a church-goer surnamed Zhao told AFP in Baoding, adding that he hopes the churches in China "do not divide."
Since a split in the 1950s, China's Catholic faithful have been divided into two camps: one state-sanctioned, with religious celebrations strictly regulated by the Communist Party, and the other operating underground with the support of the Vatican. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
