Description
The Provençal village of Allauch is in southern France's Bouches-du-Rhône region, surrounded by the hills described by French novelist Marcel Pagnol and the open-air setting of the famous French television series 'Plus belle la vie,' (A more beautiful life). But the idyllic village is in the midst of a standoff between the mayor and the prefecture regarding the construction of social housing in the commune. The prefect has issued a decree to take control of a plot and build social housing there, while the commune currently only has 7.5% of social housing, far from the 25% required by the Law on Solidarity and Urban Renewal (SRU). Mayor Lionel de Cala says he wants to preserve the quality of life, and residents fear the arrival of what they call 'northern neighborhoods' in their village. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
