"We entered the area upon a request from civilians and due to the presence of outlaw forces ... Thankfully, the outlaws have been dealt with firmly and we have restored our control of this area," says Khaled Mohammed al-Hussein, a Syrian security official in Sahnaya, where deadly sectarian clashes with Druze fighters erupted overnight and Israeli strikes were reported. The sectarian violence and Israel's intervention present huge challenges to the Islamist authorities who overthrew longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, and follow massacres last month in Syria's Alawite coastal heartland.
