Description
In the last few days, massive strandings of sargassum (large brown seaweed) have washed up on the shores of Guadeloupe, impacting several communities like Gosier, Petit-Bourg, and even Pointe-à-Pitre, a community which is usually less affected by this phenomenon. Floating barriers have been installed for several years, and "others should be put in place in the coming weeks," says the sub-prefect of Pointe-à-Pitre, Jean-François Moniotte. Upstream, a sargassum collection is planned, with the prefecture planning to test offshore disposal to avoid saturating storage sites. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
