Description
From Indigenous rituals to the laboratory: in Brazil, the "jurema preta" plant, which contains a powerful psychedelic, is gaining ground as a potential treatment for depression.
Available in the medicinal herb stalls that abound in this Latin American giant, "jurema preta", or Mimosa tenuiflora, contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in its roots. Research in China, South Korea, the United States, Finland, and the United Kingdom has already suggested that this hallucinogenic substance could alleviate depression.
In Brazil, scientists and users attest to its potential, but some warn "it is not a magic cure." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
