Description
In northern Kenya's poorest county, Turkana, people living with mycetoma, a disease which can start with a mere thorn prick, but if it reaches the bone lead to amputation, describe how this infection has devastated their lives. "I need help, I have become a good for nothing," says Joyce Lokonyi. The fungal variety of mycetoma is endemic across the so-called "mycetoma belt" -- including Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and northern Kenya -- with funding and research desperately lacking.
