More than a dozen French left-wing lawmakers attend a ceremony commemorating the victims of the "Setif massacre of May 8, 1945", in Algeria's Setif city. On May 8, 1945, as France celebrated victory of over Nazism, pro-independence demonstrations took place in Setif, Guelma, and Kherrata in eastern Algeria, which were brutally suppressed by the former colonial power's forces, leaving thousands dead: 45,000 according to Algerians, 1,500 to 20,000 according to the French.
