Description
Some 50 Waorani Indigenous people carrying their traditional spears and feathered headdresses rally in Quito to oppose the Ecuadoran government's new plans to expand oil exploitation in the Amazon.
In 2019, a sector belonging to this native people won a court ruling that vetoed the entry of oil companies to an area of 180,000 hectares out of the 800,000 hectares in the Amazonian provinces of Pastaza, Napo and Orellana owned by the Wao.
The law recognizes Indigenous jurisdiction, but maintains the State's power over the subsoil. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
