Description
US President Donald Trump criticized Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, a day after Powell said the Fed would keep its key interest rate unchanged for the third straight meeting.
"Everybody's cutting but him," said Trump in the Oval Office on Thursday.
"It's a shame. I call him 'Too Late', you know? 'Too Late Powell' that's his nickname. And it's a shame. It's ridiculous. So meeting he... he's always too late."
Powell said Wednesday that Trump’s tariffs, if they remained in place at their current level, could weaken the economy, raise inflation and increase unemployment.
Powell emphasized that the Fed is still in “wait-and-see” mode as it evaluates the tariffs’ effect on the economy.
The president went on to say the country is strong and will be even better when his "big beautiful bill" on the budget is passed by Congress.
"We have a lot of support for that bill," said Trump.
"And if that happens on top of all of these trade deals that we're doing, this country will hit a point that you better go out and buy stock. Now, let me tell you this... this country will will be like a rocket ship that goes straight up."
Reporters also pressed Trump on his picks for Surgeon General and DC US Attorney, both of which face opposition.
Trump is tapping Dr. Casey Means, a physician-turned-wellness influencer with close ties to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as his nominee for surgeon general after withdrawing his initial pick for the influential health post.
In doing so, Trump withdrew former Fox News medical contributor Janette Nesheiwat from consideration for the job, marking at least the second health-related pick from Trump to be pulled from Senate consideration.
Nesheiwat had been scheduled to appear before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Thursday for her confirmation hearing.
Trump says he will try to get Ed Martin into another government job, after he pulled his nomination for DC US Attorney.
That comes after a key Republican senator said he couldn’t support him for the job due to his defense of Jan. 6 rioters.
Martin has served as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia since Trump’s first week in office.
But his hopes of keeping the job faded amid questions about his qualifications and background, including his support for rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol over four years ago.
