Description
Across the United States, activists marked May Day with rallies and marches for workers’ rights and social justice, many aimed at opposing policies of former President Donald Trump.
Though May Day has roots as a traditional spring celebration and is a public holiday honoring labor in some countries, in the U.S. it has long been a day of protest and advocacy.
Demonstrations took place in cities nationwide, including Washington, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. Protesters called for better wages, stronger labor protections, immigrant rights, and respect for the rule of law.
In New York, crowds marched through Lower Manhattan with union members, civil rights advocates, and LGBTQ+ activists among them. In Chicago, thousands rallied in opposition to Trump administration policies. In Los Angeles, protesters from about 90 organizations joined together to advocate for working-class and immigrant communities.
Philadelphia saw a large turnout as well, where dozens of demonstrators staged a sit-in at an intersection wearing signs reading “Workers over billionaires.” Police eventually detained several participants, leading them to nearby buses.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., addressed a crowd outside Philadelphia’s City Hall.
“If we start electing candidates who work for us and not the billionaire class, if we think big and not small, brothers and sisters, there is nothing we cannot accomplish,” he said.
