Description
At New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia said Saturday that the world "had lost a father" following the death of Pope Francis.
Caccia described Francis as a “person of trust, a person close to all of us” as he addressed mourners inside the neo-Gothic landmark that’s the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of New York in the United States.
Caccia recalled Francis once describing himself as a ”sinner on whom the Lord has turned his gaze.”
His comments came as world leaders and rank-and-file Catholic faithful bade farewell to Francis in a funeral Saturday that highlighted his concern for people on the peripheries and reflected his wish to be remembered as a simple pastor.
Though presidents and princes attended the Mass in St. Peter’s Square, prisoners and migrants welcomed Francis' coffin at his final resting place in a basilica across town.
