A Mountain View City Council member accused of shooting a teenager in the face pleaded not guilty on Monday as he faces both criminal charges and a recall effort. The charges for Brent Metz stem from a Sept. 10 shooting in Conifer. Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a property on Pleasant Park Road after a woman reported trespassers. When they arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy bleeding from his face and noticed a bullet hole in the windshield of his vehicle. The 17-year-old and a 15-year-old boy told investigators they had gone to the property to ask the homeowner for permission to take homecoming photos by a lake. After receiving no answer at the door, they returned to their car — which was parked off the property — and began writing a note requesting permission. That note was later recovered by authorities. According to the district attorney’s office, Metz drove up to the teens' vehicle, blocking it with his own. He got out holding a gun, and a shot was fired through the windshield, hitting the 17-year-old in the face. Both teens said Metz appeared shocked after the gun went off, reportedly saying, "Oh sh**, my gun went off," before attempting to render aid. Metz is charged with second-degree assault, illegal discharge of a firearm and two counts of menacing — one for each of the teens involved. He entered a not guilty plea in Jefferson County District Court.
