Description
A lawsuit accusing Apple Inc. of violating wiretapping laws will not go to trial. Instead, the company agreed to settle the case with a $95 million payout.
That money gets put into a fund to be dispersed among eligible members of the settlement class.
What did Apple do?
The lawsuit alleges that anytime the user of an Apple device unintentionally or accidentally activated Siri, the company collected that information and may have shared it with third parties.
This process that the class-action claims Apple was engaged in is called lead generation. You can read more about how lead generation impacts your privacy here.
To be clear, Apple denies doing anything illegal. A settlement agreement is not an admission to the lawsuit's accusations.
What is Apple's privacy policy around Siri?
Apple's privacy policy states that transcripts and data collected through interactions with Siri are only used to improve Siri's technology and operations. The company also says that this information is stored through a randomly generated identification number and is not linked to a consumer's personal information.
The one caveat to this, as the privacy policy states, happens when Siri interacts with a third-party app. If Siri triggers another app on the device, the consumer's data is subject to the privacy policy of that app, not of Apple.

How do I know if I'm eligible?
The settlement administrator has already begun sending personalized emails and notices to eligible consumers. These notices include 'Claimant ID' numbers and a confirmation code that are to be submitted through the online settlement portal.
Consumers can still submit a claim even if they didn't get a personalized email or notice, as long as they met the following eligibility criteria between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024:
Owned at least one Apple device with Siri enabled
Experienced at least one accidental or unintended Siri activation
Was having a private conversation during at least one unintended/accidental Siri activation
How do I make sure I submit my claim securely?
There is only one official way to submit a claim for a part of the $95 million settlement: through the court-appointed settlement administrator's website linked here.
If there are any issues submitting a claim, consumers can reach out to the settlement administrator through the 'Contact' page of the website or by calling 888-981-4106.
The deadline to file a claim is July 2, 2025.
How much money will I get?
The agreement allows eligible members of the settlement class to claim up to $20 per Apple device, with consumers limited to five devices. That means the maximum payout amount is $100.
The actual amount depends on how many people submit claims. The more people who submit claims, the lower the payout will be.
When will I get paid?
Even after the deadline to submit a claim passes, there are additional legal proceedings that must take place before any payments from the settlement fund can be paid out.
There is a final approval hearing set for August 1, 2025. If there are no appeals to the final payout amount, a judge will rule, sometime after that hearing, that payments can begin.
In short, it will likely take months after the final hearing before checks start to be sent out.
