Four teens have been arrested after deputies say they were involved in a "brutal beating" that left a 35-year-old Mulberry man seriously hurt. The attack was initially reported just before midnight on Monday, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. At a press conference, Sheriff Grady Judd said Juan Ramos Sr. and his wife were in a heated discussion earlier that day. Ramos had reportedly been drinking, but "he left home to de-escalate, to calm down." According to the sheriff, Ramos Sr. was walking by a car wash off of N. Church Avenue when he "saw a young man who was Hispanic washing his truck." Judd said Ramos was in a "drunken stupor" and asked the man if he was part of the MS-13 gang. A friend of the man who was inside the truck then made a phone call. Shortly after, four teens showed up. At the time, Ramos was reportedly walking north on the sidewalk on Highway 37 in Mulberry towards his house. "He has not hit anyone. He has not started an argument or a fight, and these guys rush to him," Judd said. The teens "jumped on him like a bunch of pack animals" and began to beat him before one of the teens knocked him out cold, according to the sheriff. Ramos told investigators he walked back home after he woke up. He was hospitalized for serious injuries to his face, including a broken nose, broken jaw, multiple lacerations and swelling. Judd said as of Friday afternoon, he is still in intensive care. "Animalistic. It's horrible. You can't believe that people will care so little for another human being," Judd said. Initially, investigators said Ramos was uncooperative because he was already on probation and "was not supposed to be drinking." However, Judd said he eventually discussed the details with investigators on Thursday.
