Description
A south St. Pete grocer may be forced to move because of plans to relocate the St. Pete free clinic.
Mair's grocery store and restaurant has been on Dr. M.L.K Jr. Street for 24 years.
“It feels like home. It's like a lot of people that come here they feel like they're at home getting a home cooked meal,” Kymani Lewin who works at the store said.
A beacon in South St. Pete now facing possible demolition.
“The highest concentration and the highest utilization zip code of our downtown fresh pantry is the 33705 zip code,” Jennifer Yeagley, St. Pete Free Clinic CEO said.
That's why the St. Pete free clinic wants to create a hub for social and medical services here and knock down the Mair’s building for parking.
“We thought this was going to be a structure here which is going to be part of the pantry,” Karen Lewin who works at the store said.
Mair's employees organized a petition and have gathered more than 2,000 signatures.
“This is our history. A history that should not be demolished, moved or pushed out of the same neighborhood that we've been a pivotal staple of for many years,” Kadeijha Miller, owner’s daughter said.
The clinic said its held meetings with community members and neighborhood associations about this.
