Description
Three families were displaced from their homes Monday night after a two-alarm fire broke out at a nearby scrap yard in Tampa.
Tampa Fire Rescue crews responded at 6:18 p.m. to a mechanic shop and scrap yard located on W. Osborne Avenue near N. Church Avenue after multiple 911 callers reported seeing heavy smoke.
They arrived to find a large, covered exterior section of yard "heavily involved in fire," with flames quickly spreading to the nearby six-unit apartment building.
Firefighters began an interior attack to stop the fire from reaching the apartments, while additional crews focused on battling the flames in the scrap yard with multiple hose lines and aerial ladder trucks. Meanwhile, everyone at the apartment building was evacuated.
Crews brought the fire under control within about 90 minutes. No one was hurt.
Despite efforts to stop the fire from spreading, all six apartment units were damaged by fire, smoke or water. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.
Investigators are working to find out the cause of the fire.
