Description
As the world watches for Pope Francis to be laid to rest, a Tampa couple looks back at a blessing they received from him just weeks into their marriage.
The moment only lasted seconds but Jessica DuBois said she and her husband will cherish it.
"He felt so just genuinely kind and humble. He didn't come across as like someone that felt higher than us or more important than us. I think he really enjoyed being with the people," DuBois said.
It was March of 2013.
DuBois and her husband were on their honeymoon. DuBois said her husband was able to receive a sponsorship for the Sposi Novelli but even then, she wasn't sure what to expect.
Then came Pope Francis. Newly elected with the world still learning much about him.
However, the brief interaction said a lot about him to DuBois.
"He just genuinely cared about everybody and there was no discrimination. He really did value just everyone equally," she said. "I think he truly, in his heart, wants everyone to kind of be happy and just kind of live and walk in Jesus' footprints."
Pope Francis was known as "the People's Pope" for looking after the marginalized and doing so with humility.
The 266th pope was praised for his groundbreaking steps to honor the poor and the vulnerable; seek to end conflicts like those in the Middle East, Ukraine and Africa; protect the environment; and guide the Catholic Church toward greater tolerance of gays and lesbians, among other things. Some critics say he didn't always go far enough. Others said he went too far.
As Catholics and non-Catholics praise the late pontiff for his contributions, DuBois said his legacy is a reminder to spread kindness and to help one another.
"The world just really lost a really beautiful person, and I hope that his impact on not only the church, but just on everyone is just a reminder to like put our swords away," she said.
