Vails Dobson Ice Arena is undergoing a massive renovation and the first in its four decade history. The ice arena was built in the 1970s and is now undergoing a $55 million renovation adding restrooms, locker room space, more entrances and exits and becoming more ADA accessible so they can bring in sled hockey tournaments. They’re also updating the lighting system so they can punch up concerts that they hold in the arena. The Dobson ice arena is one of the largest multiuse ice venues on the western slope and while it was built in the 1970s, some of that architectural design will remain. The freestanding wood roof inside is being preserved because designers say you won’t find a whole lot of facilities in the United States with that kind of architecture. work is expected to last about 18 months.
