Description
A Minnesota man is facing decades in prison after he was charged for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at a U.S. Army tank on display outside a Sarasota VFW post.
Trang Johnny Nha Phan, 25, was charged with attempted arson of federal property, possessing a Molotov cocktail as a convicted felon and using the cocktail after he tried to light the tank on fire on Feb. 14, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The tank is a M-60 A-3 tank owned by the U.S. Army. That kind of tank was first used in the 1960s and phased out of service in 1997, according to Army Technology.
At the time, Phan had been convicted for threats of violence and possessing three grams or more of heroin, the release stated.
Phan was indicted Tuesday in federal court in Tampa.
If he is convicted on all counts, he faces a minimum penalty of 35 years and up to 65 in federal prison, officials said.
The news release said the case is part of Operation Take Back America, which is a nationwide initiative to protect communications against violent crime.
