Description
We may have year-round beach weather here in the Tampa Bay area, but it's still a good idea to check on the water quality before you leave the house.
The Florida Department of Health (FDOH) in Pinellas County issued a swim advisory on Thursday for Mandalay Park, Sand Key County Beach and Indian Rocks County beach due to "high bacteria levels." According to a press release, an advisory is issued when samples are above the threshold for enterococci bacteria, which officials say normally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and animals.
According to FDOH, the presence of enteric bacteria indicates fecal pollution, which can come from stormwater runoff, pets, wildlife and human sewage. It can cause human disease, infections or rashes.
Officials say swimming is not recommended until resampling indicates that the water is within the satisfactory range.
If you have open cuts or sores, it's best to keep them as clean as possible by washing them with soap and water. FDOH says it's also recommended to apply antibiotic cream to reduce the risk of infection.
If a wound or sore develops redness, swelling or drainage, health officials advise to see a physician.
The latest testing on beaches will be update on the FDOH website.
