May 28 on The Story: Within the past several years, Oregon has opened three new schools dedicated to helping teenagers who are struggling with substance abuse — providing a supportive place for them to learn in Lake Oswego, Portland and Salem. Culminating in a 2023 bill passed by the legislature, the plan has been to open three schools every two years up to a total of nine throughout the state. But in this tight budget season, Gov. Tina Kotek has only allocated enough funding for a single new school, a stipulation her office says "maintains base funding" for the program. That has recovery advocates extremely disappointed, and hoping for some help from lawmakers before the end of this legislative session.
