Description
Law enforcement officials are providing an update Monday morning regarding the suspect charged in the police officer shootings in Mifflin Township.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office will be joined by Mifflin Township Police Chief David Briggs and several law enforcement agencies, including the Columbus Division of Police and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
The suspect, 21-year-old Daveonte Dixon, was captured Friday night after officers served a search warrant at an apartment complex on Thelma Drive in Obetz.
Gunshots were heard coming from the apartment and Dixon was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin. He was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.
Dixon’s capture came days after two Mifflin Township police officers were shot during a traffic stop on the northeast side on May 28.
The officers conducted the traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Mecca Road and Perdue Avenue. After four minutes, Dixon, who was the passenger inside the vehicle, got out and started running away.
The officers began pursuing Dixon. The suspect pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots at both of them, according to Baldwin.
The two officers were taken to Grant Medical Center for treatment. One of the officers was treated and discharged from the hospital, while the other remained in the intensive care unit and will stay there for a few weeks.
An arrest warrant was filed for Dixon, charging him with attempted murder and felonious assault. A $40,000 cash reward was being offered for information leading to his arrest.
The manhunt for Dixon lasted about two days when the investigation led authorities to the apartment in Obetz.
A woman was arrested and charged after court records say she was harboring Dixon, according to court documents. Jayla Call, 31, was charged with obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence.
Additional records from Franklin County Municipal Court show that Dixon has been previously charged in various incidents dating back to 2022.
Records from Franklin County Court of Common Pleas state that Dixon pleaded guilty in 2024 to felony charges of aggravated burglary, unlawful possession of a dangerous ordinance and having weapons while under disability. The charges stemmed from an incident in 2023.
As part of a plea agreement, he was put under community control for up to six months.
