Description
Two officers with the Mifflin Township Police Department were shot while conducting a traffic stop Wednesday evening, according to Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin.
According to Baldwin, two officers were conducting traffic stop near the intersection of Mecca Road and Perdue Avenue and stopped a car around 6:45 p.m. About four minutes after they engaged with the driver of the car, the passenger bailed out and began running, Baldwin said in a press conference.
As the officers pursued the passenger, authorities said Dixon pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots at them. One officer was struck multiple times, including once in the face, and the other was struck once in the right arm, according to Franklin County Municipal Court documents.
The driver spoke with detectives who identified Dixon. According to court documents, the driver had picked up Dixon and was heading to purchase a watch when he was stopped by police.
Baldwin said it was “unprovoked.”
Both officers were transported to Grant Medical Center—one listed in critical condition and the other reported as stable.
In an update shortly after midnight, Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9, announced that the officer previously in critical condition had undergone surgery and was now stable. However, as of a 1 a.m. press release, the sheriff’s office continued to list the officer’s condition as critical.
Baldwin said the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Daveonte Dixon, got away. A warrant was issued for Dixon, who was charged with one count of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault.
Baldwin said the suspect was wearing a gray shirt and camo pants at the time of the incident.
"Our focus right now is on the recovery of our injured officers and bringing the individual responsible to justice. We are asking anyone with information to come forward immediately," Baldwin said.
Multiple agencies responded, including Gahanna Division of Police, Columbus Division of Police, Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Mifflin Township Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Mifflin Township Fire Department. A police helicopter was also seen circling the scene.
Columbus police initially told 10TV that one suspect was in custody. Baldwin later said the driver was taken into custody, but was cooperative and released. The driver is not considered a suspect at this time.
Two Columbus officers were also injured in a crash at Weber Road and Cleveland Avenue while responding to the officer in trouble call, according to Steel. Both officers are described as stable.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to assist.
Additional records from Franklin County Municipal Court show that Dixon has been previously charged in various incidents dating back to 2022.
Records from Franklin County Court of Common Pleas state that Dixon pleaded guilty in 2024 to felony charges of aggravated burglary, unlawful possession of a dangerous ordinance and having weapons while under disability. The charges stemmed from an incident in 2023.
As part of a plea agreement, he was put under community control for up to six months.
